How I Make My Handmade Soy Candles

There is something special about a candle that has been carefully made by hand. At Carol’s Candles And Gifts Ltd, every candle is made with care, from choosing the vessle, preparing the wax, adding fragrance and colours, to finishing and packaging the completed candle.

Choosing the Right Materials

One of the most important parts of candle making is choosing good-quality materials. I use plant-based soy wax for many of my candles because it provides a lovely finish and is a popular choice for handmade candle making. It is also eco-friendly, vegan safe and sustainable.

Another important step is to carefully select my wicks, fragrances, jars and other items to create candles that look beautiful and are enjoyable to use. It depends on the size and style of your candle as to what wick and how much fragrance you need.

Preparing the Candle

Making a candle is more than simply melting wax and pouring it into a jar.
The wax needs to be carefully prepared before it is poured. The temperature, wick position and pouring process can all affect the finished candle. Some waxes have a lower melting point while others are much higher. It is always worth checking these before you start. It is a good idea to use a candle making thermometer to check wax. If you pour wax too cool it may not harden correctly and cause burn issues.
I take my time with each batch and make sure the wick is positioned correctly before the wax is poured. Sometimes candle jars are also warmed a little before pouring to help the candle set nicely. This also helps the wax nit to cool to quickly.

Adding the Fragrance

For scented candles, fragrance is an important part of the finished product. You can create different atmospheres depending on what style you choose. These can be grounding, uplifting and help with relaxation. Making them perfect for a nice wellbeing gift.

I carefully measure the fragrance before adding it to the wax so that each candle has a consistent scent. Though it is important to test as some fragrances have a better and stronger scent throw. My favourite fragrance type are pure essential oils. These are purchase through verified suppliers that also can provide the assessment details. This I find useful to know that the fragrance is is good quality, consistently tested and made specifically for use in my business.
Once everything has been mixed, the scented wax is carefully poured into the prepared container.

Allowing the Candle to Set

After pouring, the candles need time to cool and set properly. Something that can also effect the setting is room temperature. If the room is very cold it can cool the wax too quickly and cause frosting, or cracks in the candles. If the room is very hot it can stop candles setting properly and take a long time.

This is one of the parts of candle making where patience is important. Once the wax has completely hardened, I can check the candle and make sure it has the finish I am looking for. I usually leave them overnight and test them after 24-48 hours depending on size.

Checking and Finishing Each Candle

Before a candle leaves my workshop, I check it carefully.
I look at the wax, the wick, the container and the overall appearance. I want each candle to be presented nicely because I know that many of my candles are purchased as gifts as well as for people’s own homes.
The finished candle is then prepared for packaging.

Why I Enjoy Making Candles

For me, candle making is about creating something by hand rather than simply producing another item.

I enjoy choosing the materials, experimenting with different scents and designs, and seeing the finished candle ready to go to its new home. It is also relaxing and fun.
Every candle is made with care and attention, and that is what makes handmade products special.
